Flying With Southwest Airlines By Erik Hastings For those of you that have flown Southwest Airlines before, what you are about to read will not surprise you. My first trip with Southwest was a wild success. The overall experience was perfect at every point of service; very impressive operation.
My wife booked tickets on Southwest based on the cost of the ticket and because Southwest does not charge you for the first two checked bags per passenger. The round trip airfare from LaGuardia (New York) to Minneapolis was around $350.00 after taxes. Not the absolute cheapest, but after you factor in other airlines checked luggage fees, the Southwest choice was the most logical. We didn't need a full vacation package on this trip (hotel, car rental etc), but I did learn Southwest has its own vacation planning and booking division! 24 hours prior to our departure, we checked in online and printed our boarding passes. The website couldn’t be easier to navigate! On our travel day, I checked the flight status (although they do have an app. that will send alerts right to your portable device) and the flights were on time and looking great. The weather was good in New York, Chicago (our layover city) and Minneapolis. We took a car service to the airport because we needed the trunk space of a minivan (we used Dial 7) and departed for the airport to arrive 90 minutes before our scheduled departure. The check in was flawless with their automated system. We checked our bags (none of them overweight) and got in the security line. The line was a bit on the long side, after all, this was the holiday travel season. There is no assigned seating on Southwest. They fly the same aircraft fleet-wide, so all the cabin configurations are the same. It’s three seats, then the aisle, then another three seats. There is no first or business class and they board by letter. “A’s” board first (after any pre-boarding folks who need extra time), then the families board, then the “B’s” and finally the “C’s”. I found this boarding process easy, fluid and uncomplicated. But do whatever you need to do to be an “A”. Sure, you might still have someone in the middle, but at least you’ll have a better selection (aisle or window) and plenty of overhead bin space. On board, the flight attendants were great! The plane was clean (all leather seats) and the beer, wine and cocktails were reasonably priced. They also served us honey-roasted peanuts and Cheese Nips! Currently in New York, the gates for Southwest are at LaGuardia airport in the main terminal. In Chicago they fly into Midway, and let me tell you, I was happy to connect through this much smaller and easy to navigate airport. In Minneapolis we flew into the smaller of the two terminals. Again, very short walk to baggage claim and all of our bags arrived on time and scuff-free. We considered changing our itinerary and after a quick call to reservations, I was pleasantly reminded that Southwest does not charge you a FEE to change your itinerary. However, they will ask you to pay the difference in fares for a new ticket. In our case it would have been about 100 dollars per person to change our itinerary. Not bad. If I had a complaint about my Southwest experience, I’d share it; however, I don’t have one. For an airline, that is impressive. If you have a chance, fly Southwest; if they fly where you are going, then you too will be thrilled with the service. Thanks Southwest, for taking expert care of my family on our holiday trek to see the relatives |
