What is an "Ambassador Travelogue?" - Find out here...
The mountains, the ocean, the wildlife, the forests, the coastline… There are so many different aspects to Maine’s backdrop. And you can see them all in Acadia National Park, just adjacent to Bar Harbor on Mount Desert Island.
This is an outdoors-person’s dream. Hiking, rock climbing, fishing, kayaking, biking or cross country skiing along the carriage roads -- you can do it all, or just take a relaxing drive along the 27-mile Loop Road and take in the scenery.
Along the Loop Road, you’ll see sites like Sand Beach, Otter Cliffs, and Thunder Hole, a crevasse in the rocks where, when the ocean is rough and the waves crash in, it sounds, well, like thunder.
There’s wildlife all over the place, and moose, deer, bald eagles, peregrine falcons, puffins and seals are not uncommon sights. Fishermen and women can find brook trout, lake trout, landlocked salmon and smallmouth bass among their catch.
Also inside the park, you’ll find Cadillac Mountain, the tallest mountain on the east coast of the U.S. at about 1500 feet. Something pretty cool to do is to drive to the top just before sunrise, so that when the sun comes up, you can be the very first person in the United States to see the sun that day.
Other things to do at Acadia include horse-drawn carriage tours along the carriage trails, hiking the forests and mountains on 125-plus miles of trails (varying in difficulty from easy to “don’t-look-down”), or stopping off at Jordan Pond House for tea and popovers – a tradition for over a hundred years. Rangers lead a variety of tours and presentations, too, including lots of stuff for the kids.
Acadia Park also features museums, a nature center, and Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse, all cool to check out. The park is also open in winter, making it a beautiful and inviting place to cross country ski, snowmobile, snowshoe, or ice fish.
As with nearby Bar Harbor, no matter if you like adventure or quietude, you’ll find it in the beauty and majesty of Acadia National Park.
