Norwegian Gem - New York
She’s the latest offering from Norwegian Cruise Line and she is spectacular. This was my first time cruising with NCL and I was impressed. The Gem will begin sailings (primarily Caribbean) out of New York in February of 2007 and if you only have time to take a few days off, then this is the ship for you. I am the first to admit I am by no means a “cruising expert” but as an average open water vacationer, the Gem and her crew accommodated every possible need I had on the short two day cruise in December of 2007. From the dining and nightlife to the onboard activities and shows, my experience on The Norwegian Gem exceeded my expectations.
Check in could not have been easier at Pier 88 on the west side of Manhattan. The check in staff was prompt, friendly and efficient. My stateroom was an outside cabin (that’s industry speak for a stateroom facing the water) on deck 11 with a private balcony. I found the stateroom tastefully decorated with a comfortable bed and crisp linens. I was also impressed by the size of the lavatory (which included a bath tub). I also appreciated the flat screen TV with movie options and a vast assortment of channels with which to unwind. While were on the subject, the most expensive staterooms on board are the Garden Villa suites equipped with private balconies, butler service and priority restaurant seating. No matter what your budget, I’m confident you’ll discover your accommodations ergonomically designed and perfectly suitable for your stay.
On of the differentiators NCL hangs their captains hat on is “free style cruising”. And to me, that basically means they are sending out the message that you can participate in ANY of the activities while onboard at your leisure. Unlike some cruise lines, NCL wants it’s passengers to set their own agenda much like a resort. One of the examples worth noting is the dining. On the Gem, the passengers decide where, with whom and at one time they eat. Other notable features include coffee makers in every state room, in-room safes, wireless internet (both in-room and throughout the ship), extensive kids programs and a four lane bowling alley. The list of features is lengthy but after you do your homework prior to your sailing, you’ll discover The Gem is one of the most modern and contemporary ships at sea (not to mention one of the newest).
The dining was spectacular. The Gem has 10 signature restaurants and while we didn’t have time to try them all, I especially enjoyed Cagney’s (the steakhouse) and Le Bistro (French). They were out of this world. Also don’t miss Orchid Garden (Asian). I was also pleased to NOT be able to find the buffet. Yes, they have 24 in-room dining, but in the dining room where you might expect to find a buffet, instead you’ll see a series of “preparation stations” where the food is prepared in front of you. No more standing in a line waiting for the person in front of you. Reservations are not required at any of the onboard restaurants, but it is helpful to make a dinner reservation or two in advance.
Yes, The Norwegian Gem offers all the usual suspects when it comes to attractions and amenities. I saw two great stage shows on my trip. One of which was a sketch comedy show from Second City (a particular favorite of mine). I spent time in the state of the art gym as well as a message at the Spa. Not to mention, the casino set me back a few bucks…but my girlfriend did win 277 dollars on the penny slots, which we spent shopping duty-free.
It was clear from every crew member as well as the ship design and execution of her features that NCL has once again committed to excellence in cruising. I found this especially true for the novice cruiser like me. If you are looking to take a cruise for the first time, I highly recommend The Norwegian Gem, she is truly a magnificent way to travel.
