New York City Travel Guide
My
New York City Travel Guide. It’s about this little place I like to call
home. I really love New York City and can’t imagine living anywhere
else. (Well, I can imagine it, I just don’t want to right now.) You’ve
heard it before, but the energy of this city is like no other. And
every day I learn something new. (Today’s lesson: When the British
marched north they hugged the coast of New Jersey but our cannons
couldn’t reach them across the Hudson River.) I’ll keep this short and
just offer up some favorite things: splurge on a helicopter tour of the
city, it’s totally awesome; and for a cheap and really great way to see
the Statue of Liberty, take a round trip ride on the Staten Island
ferry. My favorite restaurant is Old Homestead Steakhouse, the
granddaddy of all the new restaurants in the trendy meatpacking
district. My favorite neighborhood though is the West Village; I like
the grand old townhouses and small Mom & Pop stores nestled between
the Starbucks. If you head down there and feel like walking the wild
side (the wild-ish side, anyway) stop at Stonewall for Bingo hosted by
some of the most outrageous drag queens I’ve ever seen, or pop across
7th Avenue to Marie’s Crisis for some fierce Piano Bar – trust me, two
drinks and you’ll be singing along! If that’s not you’re speed,
Arthur’s Tavern is right next door and always has an excellent Blues
performer. Couple other spots lots of people miss are The Cloisters, an
old monastery at the northern tip of Manhattan which has some lovely
15th & 16th century artwork, and the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens are
really great.
