Destination: Grand Canyon

My Trip:

I have to come clean on this entry and admit I was not the adventure seeker many who tour the Canyon are. I didn’t ride down to the bottom on a mule. I didn’t battle the rapids of the Colorado River in a flimsy plastic boat. What I did was take a helicopter flight from Las Vegas and spent the day on the rim. Okay, so you might think I’m just a girly-man, but it was well worth the trip. Not only did I get to ride in a helicopter, which is really really cool, but I got to see this glorious natural wonder from a bird’s eye view. And to spend some time at the Grand Canyon actually is a transcendent experience. First off, it’s much bigger than you or Thelma or Louise ever imagined. To sit on a rock bench that has been in the same place for a million years as you watch the light shift from morning to afternoon to evening really belittles and amazes. To see the colors –oranges and reds and yellows and browns – that seem to shift and change as the day goes on is an experience I’ll never forget and highly recommend.
