Destination: Datona Beach, FL
My Trip:
I think Daytona is a great place to sneak away to, even for a long weekend. Whenever I go, I stay at this wonderfully inexpensive hotel right across from the ocean so that I don’t have too far to walk to the sand and the surf. Just be careful because in Daytona they drive right on the beach! But that’s only fitting for the city that hosts the annual Daytona 500, which a lot of people call the Great American Race. I’ve never been to Daytona during the race, but I can imagine it’s a crowded blast, much like it can be during Spring Break. But if you come at other times of year, not only can you always find some excitement, but some relaxation as well. One of my favorite places in Lighthouse Point Park, just off Ponce de Leon Avenue. And for an even cooler experience – Sea Turtles begin coming ashore at night from May through October to lay their eggs. And then two months later, thousands of baby turtles hatch and make their way back to the ocean. Hopefully, they’ll look both ways before crossing the sand.
