Destination: Ames, IA
My Trip:
I spent a couple of years here, working at a local radio station. It’s the home of the “Cyclones” and Iowa State University, so it maintains that hip Midwestern college town atmosphere. I remember many a summer night spent taking in concert at Ames City Bandshell on Clark Street or even a touring Broadway show at the City Auditorium next door.
Mostly, I (sort of) remember nights at Whiskey River, a great local bar & grille, and fantastic meals at Aunt Maude’s right down Main Street. Although the name escapes me, be sure to wake up early and have a great country breakfast at the local diner also located on Main Street. Ames is only about a 30-minute drive from Des Moines International Airport.
